Episode 4: Harley Stroh and Peril on the Purple Planet

Tonight’s guest is an RPG writing veteran with over 40 published adventures released over the last 10 years — most of them written for Goodman Game’s Dungeon Crawl Classics series. But in 2015, Harley turned the dial all the way up to 11 and wrote the swords-and-sandals inter-planetary adventure Peril on the Purple Planet, which thanks to a massive kickstarter went on to become both a boxed set and a classic setting for the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG. Tonight, we’re going to talk to Harley and explore this adventure’s roots in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars series and Robert E. Howard’s book “Almuric,” along with a few other surprising inspirational sources.

Works and influences discussed on this show:

Peril on the Purple Planet – DCC RPG

John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Almuric by Robert E. Howard

The Warlord by Mike Grell

The Art of Doug Kovacs

Frank Frazetta John Carter of Mars art

The Sword – Tres Brujas

  1. Hey Man, easy enough to rectify but the link for the John Carter information in your list of links is actually a duplicate of the GG website one that was posted first for PPP

    Details, man! Details!

  2. Fixed! Thanks for catching that, sir.

  3. Fan-base alternative possibility:

  4. Or roadies?

They are into the music and contribute and are the backbone of what is happening.

  5. I’m not usually a “planetary romance/sword and sandals” guy, but I confess to being intrigued. Really enjoying these discussions, Jim.
