Episode 1: Michael Curtis and The Chained Coffin

Episode 1: Michael Curtis and The Chained Coffin

For this premiere episode, I’ve imposed upon my good friend and well-known podcast pilot episode test subject, Mr. Michael Curtis, to show up and help me broadcast strange voices across the Internet. Among his many fine RPG works is an adventure called The Chained Coffin, and that’s what we’re going to discuss tonight. What were the challenges and rewards of taking mid-20th century Appalachian folklore and adapting it to a medieval fantasy RPG setting? What works of literature, art, and music inspired him? What were his design goals in doing this? I’ll ask Manly Mike Curtis all these questions and more.

Welcome to this new experiment in podcasting, Designers & Discourses.

Welcome to Designers & Discourses

Welcome to Designers & Discourses

Designers & Discourses is a podcast which features intimate one-on-one interviews with game designers, writers, and artists discussing their influences and inspirations. Guests will be asked to discuss a game product that they have created, and to share the books, music, movies, and other media that inspired and informed their work.

The Designers & Discourses podcast format will feature 1 hour or longer interview sessions that will allow guests ample opportunity to expand upon their work and influences in-depth, and in ways not usually possible in typical podcast formats or game convention seminars. We’ll attempt to explore the primary sources of inspiration for the guests’ creative works. Discussion tone will be informed by the guest, but will generally be earnest and thoughtful in character. The podcast release schedule is intended to be monthly, but may vary.
